Jets to wear Titans throwbacks in Opener
Quote:
The Jets have already unveiled a titanic gameday decision to the New England Patriots for their home opener on Sept. 14. Instead of sporting their traditional green and white uniforms at the Meadowlands, the Jets will be in Titans navy and gold as they hope to reverse the tide in the series.
In addition to the ’08 home opener, New York’s AFC representative will also don the blue jerseys and gold pants — replicas of the uniforms the New York Titans wore, with some modifications, from 1960-62 — in their third home contest, a post-bye Oct. 12 showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Last season, the Jets went 1-1 in their throwbacks. They dropped a 16-9 decision to the Philadelphia Eagles at the Meadowlands on Oct. 9 and then throttled the Dolphins, 40-13, in Miami on Dec. 2. The Titans’ merchandise was a hit with fans and the team has added more items for an encore.
“We have a new collection of hats, some new T-shirts and some new fleeces,” said Chris Pierce, the club’s senior director of merchandise. “The program was so well received last year that we wanted to add a few different items and tweak it a little bit.”

The Jets will also modify their traditional green home jerseys when the Kansas Chiefs come to town on Oct. 26. To honor the Jets’ 1968 championship team, the players will wear a commemorative 40th anniversary Super Bowl III patch on their left chests. At halftime, the team will honor many of the championship alumni in what promises to be an emotional ceremony.

“The players who are returning for the halftime ceremony will wear their period jerseys, so they’ll be wearing the white jerseys they wore on the field in the Orange Bowl when they shocked the world,” Pierce said.
Before they sent tremors in Miami, the Jets actually topped the Chiefs, 20-19, in KC on Sept. 15, 1968.
“We picked Kansas City because they were one of our great rivals from the American Football League,” Pierce said. “We thought it would be a great way to commemorate the event, bring all of the alumni back that we can and have the celebration at halftime to honor their contribution and what it meant to the organization and what it meant to professional football.”
The Jets will pay homage to their history in 2008, but they clearly want to make some of their own. After hitting South Beach and colliding with the Dolphins on Sept. 7, they’ll go old-school against the Pats before what promises to be an enthusiastic faithful — the Jets Flight Crew, which more than doubled in size from its inaugural season, will also debut their Marc Ecko-designed unis on the 14th.
While the Jets own a 28-21 home advantage in their series against the Pats, they’ve dropped the last seven at home wearing three different ensembles: green jerseys and white pants (0-3), white-and-white (0-2) and green-and-green (0-2). The Titans were 1-2 against the Boston Patriots from 1960-62 before a five man syndicate led by David A. “Sonny” Werblin purchased the Titans for $1 million and changed the franchise’s name to the Jets.
The organization will throw another Titans wrinkle out in 2009 when they showcase white Titans jerseys to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
