Dude, this makes ZERO sense. That may work on Law & Order but in the real world if you BS the Federal Government you are utterly screwed.
He's not trying to get out of jail...he's already going to jail. All he's doing is trying to get a lesser sentence as part of his plea deal but that only happens if what he tells is true.
Him lying only makes it worse for him. They'll add a perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements charges on top of his current sentence and the dude never gets out of jail.
He has every reason to tell the truth. This isn't Barney Fife doing the investigation, this is the Federal Government. You screw them, they screw you harder.
