usually a blown headgasket comes from a previous time that the car has been run hot. Either from something faulty in the cooling system (water pump, radiator, thermostat, cracked hose, etc) or driving harshly/harsh conditions like towing.
but i have to say that cooling system problems in imports are far less than gm's.
I've never had a water pump fail on me in an import but then again i always change my hondas with the timing belt ever 60K.
I've never had a gm water pump last more than about 50K before she started leaking fluid.
