NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke loud and clear yesterday to those Rooney brothers who might want to sell the Steelers to outside interests: The league and its owners will do everything in their power to keep Dan Rooney and his son in control of the franchise. "There's great respect for the Rooney family in the National Football League,'' Goodell said after a 21/2 --hour meeting with the five Rooney brothers, "and we want to do everything we can to ensure that the Steelers continue to be operated by the Rooneys and the way they've been operated."
