The news keeps getting worse for San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman. Merriman told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Saturday that he has two torn ligaments in his left knee, putting his season in jeopardy. “I’m just trying to get an opinion on what I need to do, how bad the injury is and if I can do anything to play,” Merriman told the newspaper. “I’m going to do the best I can to get back on the field and get ready for Carolina.” Meanwhile, there are whispers that the team is bracing for the worst-case scenario — a conclusion that Merriman is experiencing bone-on-bone contact in his knee, and that he’ll possibly need microfrature surgery aimed at creating scar tissue that simulates missing cartilage.

Yea, best thing for him to do is take the season off. The AFC west as a whole is currently sending out invitations for the "Merriman isn't playing this year" party.

this is a serious injury that could force him out of the game for a couple of seasons

Me? I think his sack stats should have been erased in 2006 when he was busted for steroids. Biased Opinion alert: Plus, he's nowhere as good as Lofa Tatupu. |

I've been 'scarred' by his whole steroid thing, but you can't deny he is a hell of a lotta fun to watch out on the field. Their defense will certainly miss that.

Kevin Acee of San Diego Union-Tribune is on Sportscenter Live right now and announced that Shawne Merriman will forgo knee surgery and immediately come back and play this season.
I think this is a good and bad move at the same time. I think Merriman knows that the Chargers Super Bowl window has been open for the past 2 seasons, and this may be the last one of that window. Him not playing definitely hurts their chances in the AFC. But on the other hand dude is risking his career by playing. He just got drafted, I say at least sit out a few games before coming back. |
