How to: Replace brake rotors & brake pads

Make: Honda
Model: Civic
Trim: EX
Non-ABS

I'm sure this applies to most other Hondas or if it doesn't, it will probably be very minimal differences.

Tools needed:
1. Floor jack
2. Jack Stands
3. Big Phillips screwdriver
4. W-D 40
5. 12mm & 17mm socket's
6. Vice grip or C-clamp
7. "Cheater" bar

Parts needed:
1. New rotors
2. New pads
3. Anti-squeal grease


Step 1: Loosen Lug nuts
Step 2: Jack up the car
Step 3: Place jack stands in proper spots
Step 4: Take Wheel off

So far, everything should look like this:




Step 5: Loosen the bottom 12mm bolt on the bottom of the caliper.


Step 6: Raise the caliper so that it looks like this:


Step 7: Spray the 2 phillips head screws with WD-40. Chances are they're rusted.


Step 8: Remove the 2 phillips head screws with an impact driver. You really don't wanna get those stripped. I used a drill with a phillips head bit and didn't have a problem.


Step 9: There's (2) 17mm bolts that hold the caliper. Remove those. Here's a shot of the bolts

Another shot - If you have never taken these bolts out, you will REALLY need to use a cheater bar or a breaker bar.


Step 10: Remove the entire caliper and caliper bracket and set it aside gently


Step 11: Pull off the old rotor. If it doesn't slide out, use a mallet and tap it a few times. Should look like this when it's out:


Step 12: Install new rotor


Step 13: Install the 2 phillips screw. Be careful not to get them stripped!

Step 14: Re-install the caliper bracket and tighten the (2) 17mm bolts in the rear.

Now, it's time to install the break pads
Step 15: Squeeze the piston using vice grips, C-clamp, or the tool of your choice

Step 16: Use the anti-squeal grease that came with your pads or the grease of your choice


Step 17: Apply it to the outside surface of the break pad


Step 18: Snap brake pads into the caliper




Step 19: Install the caliper back on. Tighten the bottom 12mm bolt that was taken out earlier

Step 20: Install wheel and tighten lug nuts.

**It's recommended to bleed the system after this, but I didn't feel it was necessary since I didn't mess with the lines at all.
