The Braves have scheduled a Wednesday afternoon press conference and MLB.com speculates that they'll make an announcement regarding John Smoltz's status that may involve season-ending shoulder surgery.
Smoltz blew a save in his return from the disabled list Monday and MLB.com reports that he woke up with pain in his shoulder Tuesday. Smoltz has said in the past that he'd retire rather than undergo another shoulder operation, but indicated Monday that he might be willing to go back under the knife to prolong his career and will be a free agent after this season. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...tnered=rss_mlb Just great. |

Well, it's official.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that John Smoltz will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. The Braves have scheduled a Wednesday afternoon press conference. If Smoltz is indeed done for the season, Rafael Soriano and Manny Acosta will be competing for saves. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sp...oltz_0605.html |

at his age, shoulder surgery is going to be tough. Just look at Curt Schilling.

If he decides to retire after the surgery, then so be it. At least he's pretty much a lock for the HoF. |

if this is how smoltz, one of the best pitchers of our generation and the fiercest competitor in the game today, goes out, it's truly a shame. here's to hoping he makes a quick recovery and we see him back on the mound in the not so distant future
. he is an asset to the game of baseball, and the reason why i opted to throw the splitty in high school (which was the single most reason i received a scholarship to pitch anywhere). either way, first ballot HOFer in my opinion.
