A friend of mine does this to further breakdown the muscle for maximum growth. he claims this works, however i think this can be catabolic due to the added stress it places on already damaged muscle fibers.

...Are you sure you want to use the word "catabolic" in that sentence? It doesn't seem to fit.

He is fine. I personally would not worry about it.
Protein synthesis does not occur for 12 hours after the workout. Tell him to add weight to his sets while he is at the GYM. Does he go home and do pull us after an upper back day? Does he do curls after a bicep day?

I generally do the same thing only usually I dont do mine immediately I do mine right before going to bed at night, probably not a great idea as muscular healing has already begun, but either way, its really helps breakdown the muscle and I do chest every 3 days anyway....so I have recoop time.

Push ups are the best chest exercise.
It is just very hard to add weight.
