Oakland Raiders Raiders sign McFadden

The Oakland Raiders have signed first-round pick Darren McFadden, the team announced Thursday night.

Contract terms were not disclosed, but several media sources said the deal was for six years and $60 million, with $26 million guaranteed.

McFadden, the fourth overall pick in the draft, was participating in the Raiders' minicamp when the deal was struck. He becomes the third pick in the top four to sign. Top choice Jake Long signed with Miami before the draft and the No. 3 overall pick, quarterback Matt Ryan, completed a deal with Atlanta. Chris Long, the second overall pick by St. Louis, has yet to come to terms.

Getting McFadden signed early was apparently a high priority for the Raiders, who last year failed to agree to terms with quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the top pick in the draft, until the first week of the regular season.

The Raiders will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. ET on Friday to formally announce the deal. McFadden and coach Lane Kiffin are expected to attend.

McFadden, the Arkansas tailback who finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in each of the last two seasons, ran for 4,590 yards and 41 touchdowns in three seasons with the Razorbacks, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Though the Raiders were loaded with running backs, they decided McFadden's talents were too big to pass up with the fourth overall pick.

Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin singled out McFadden for his quick acquisition of Oakland's offense during the current minicamp.

McFadden also got his contract done quickly. His agent, Ian Greengross, conducted negotiations in Alameda this week after McFadden expressed a strong desire to be signed before camp starts next month.

The Raiders hope McFadden can be an immediate contributor after the club dumped veteran running back Dominic Rhodes and entertained trade offers for fellow veteran LaMont Jordan, who probably will be released later. Starter Justin Fargas and promising youngster Michael Bush also will be in Oakland's backfield.

This is very good news. We don't have to deal with another holdout situation. Im glad that he was the one that pushed to get a deal done. This makes me happy.

who the hell is comparing mcfadden to simpson?! simpson could run through the middle, while mcfadden has plenty yet to show before he belongs in such elite company.

I believe it was Skip Bayless from 1st and 10. I like his writing and what he has to say. He's been a writer for the New York Times and Chicago Tribune and Espn as well, so he's not some bum off the street.

this is nice that the draft pick with potential is signed and locked up before training camp...unlike Russell whom held out last year, and is the most over rated 1st overall pick......Ryan Leaf thinks Russell sucks......if you dont agree with me raiders fans...why ont you let me know about some of his "great" plays in college before his last bowl game......he was nothing special untill that bowl game and it was a bad pick by the raiders....atleast they made a better pick this year....

you're right; sports writers are always the best judges of talent. not the countless number of nfl execs when asked about mcfadden said he has a long way to go to even guarantee he'll be a fixture in the nfl someday (tyrone wheatly part deux?). bayless also believed reggie bush was the second coming of christ (colour me not impressed).

you forgot to mention that Skip should have a bullet put in his throat so no one has to hear him speak anymore....they guy has all these "facts" about sports and players yet has no information to back them up....he is wrong 9 times out of 10 and and the only reason ESPN keeps him on is so people will continue to watch him be a fool.....taking sports advice from Skip Bayless is like taking gambling advise from Charles Barkley....

I can't stand Skip Bayless either. He is a jackass. And PJ, I agree with you about Russell. I think he was a very overated first overall selection.

This year he said the Lakers were going to get upset by the Nuggets. And that the Mavericks were going to upset the Hornets. lol
