The Oakland Raiders gave a huge amount of money in the offseason to receiver Javon Walker, so much that it prompted the team to claim that the contract wasn’t worth as much as it was worth, before conceding that it actually was. But now that the investment has been made, coach Lane Kiffin says that the time has come for Walker to start earning it. “There’s a couple of balls there that we would have liked him to come up with,” Kiffin said during a Saturday teleconference. “That’s discouraging because he was paid an awful lot of money, paid like one of the top five receivers in the NFL. We need him to make those plays.” The comments are somewhat surprising, given that Kiffin recently praised Walker for emerging from a training-camp funk that caused him to contemplate retirement a couple of weeks ago.
