I managed to catch the last of the game on FSN. The Huskies were down 21-27 in the 4th Quarter. QB Jake Locker ran in a touchdown with :02 left in the game. When he was celebrating, he stood up and threw the ball in the air and jumped then started jumping up and down with his teammates. The ref called an unsportsmanlike penalty call on Locker for throwing the ball in the air. The penalty was 15 yards, and the PAT was blocked, and BYU escaped with the win 28-27.
Now while I may not be a Huskies fan, (hell the Cougars are no better), I think that throwing a football up in celebrating being called unsportsmanlike is bullshit. It's not like he spiked it in front of BYU players, he just chucked it up in celebration. But apparently the rules state that it's unsportsmanlike if you don't leave the ball where it is or hand it to a ref. This bullshit call cost them the game, and cost UW a possible upset win. Was this penalty fair or was it foul? I think the call was absolute crap, its not like he pulled a friggin sharpie out and signed the ball. |

The call was F'ing Bullshit. But at the same time, the TD did not win them the game. They needed the extra point to tie. Should not have gone crazy until it was locked down.

It was idiotic on Locker's part to do that type of celebration. But it's bull to call unsportsmanlike conduct on him celebrating. He flipped it behind him over his shoulder, and celebrated with other members of his team. To call it as excessive celebration is crap.

in my mind it doesnt matter what they do to celebrate.....if the throw the ball then let them..this isnt the NFL where they have planned celebrations....these guys are just going on joy and instinct....i do not think they should be penalized for showing a passion to win......they arent signing footballs and proposing to cheerleaders (Boise State not included).......next thing we are gonna see is leaping into the crowd will be called..its BS

Well here is what I think, it was a little excessive, and the penalty didn't lose them the game, the blocked kick did

The call is bullshit....I mean it is one thing for a player to taunt someone, but when you score with two seconds left and have a chance to beat a ranked team you cant hold back your emotion....You can take anyone and put them in that situation and they would be celebrating too....Plus my big thing is that this is taking the game out of the players hands and putting it in the refs and that is not fair

You guys must love Washington, or go there ~
or maybe you saw a different game than i saw, you are talking about the game where BYU beat washington i hope. Washington lost the game because they could not make an EPT ( extra point kick ) Don't get me wrong Washington played better than EVERY-ONE expected them to ( BYU was favored by 9 ) BUT on the last play of the game, their front line played like girls. And BYU steped up & blocked it ! as for the Penalty call..... Rule 9, Secition 2, Article 1, of the NCAA Rule Book ( the one Both teams were using at the time ) Which Says : "Throwing the ball high in the air conistitutes an unsportsman like penalty" Washington Coach Tyrone Willingham Said : "It's one they have to call when they see it " EVEN their QB said he screwed up ( he played great realy great except for that one thing ) Sorry Washington, BYU out played you & Won the game. |

Jake Locker showed me a lot in that game, taunting not being one of them. Either way, it was very dissapointing and although they may have just lost it in overtime, it became almost an instant classic. Sad decision, but rules are rules.

they say that he broke the rules but its ridiculous...their hasnt been a problem with celebration in college football, why implement a celebration penalty....its BS....these kids celebrate because of intensity and heart....not because of ego like they do in the pro's....
