Two positions to watch here for the G-Men:
1st is Wide Receiver. Burress, Steve Smith, and Manningham are all going to sit this one out, so there will be plenty of time to go around for the lesser-knowns like DJ Hall, Craphonso Thorpe, and Michael Jennings. Toomer will start. The other position is Safety, because that battle is still up for grabs, with 1st round pick Kenny Phillips, the best safety in the draft, looking to get a starting nod. Reports have it that coaches have had to yell at him for hitting our own receivers during camp, so he's definitely a player to look out for this game. Others to look out for are the back up quarterbacks, David Carr looking to revive his career and 6th round pick from Kentucky Andre Woodson trying to prove that he should've went higher. Also will be interesting to see weak side LB Danny Clark trying to fit into the system after Mitchell left for Buffalo. Last edited by nyG; 08-06-2008 at 05:38 PM. |

Im kind of worried about our linebacking core. If u can recall when we faced the panthers in the playoffs we couldnt stop the run and that killed us. I saw great improvement in that area and a big reason why we did win it all because we forced teams to be one dimensional which helped our d line go after the qb. We lost Torbor and Mitchell which I feel was a big loss, hope we can recover from that.

Assessing your backups and 3rd string players is always fun, the game itself is pretty non descript but you can get the feeling for your complimentary players and what they look like out there.

Torbor was a good depth guy, but I don't think he'll make a lot of noise in Miami. I do agree that Mitchell is a loss, he made countless plays last year in the playoffs and during the regular season, such as his TD return vs. the Eagles and the goal-line stand vs. the Redskins in week 3. (my personal fave was in the Super Bowl, the fake drop back and then blitz and him and Strahan got in for the sack on Brady) But he wanted the money that comes with winning a championship, and we chose to save it because we need to extend our key guys like Jacobs and Burress. Look for a HUGE year for BJ, i expect big things from the big fella. The only reason Clark (who played for Coughlin in Jacksonville) will get the start tomorrow is because Gerris Wilkinson is hurt. Wilkinson will get consideration for the starting job, and i personally like how he played vs. the Pats in week 17. Kiwanuka coming back for a 2nd year at linebacker should show some improvement. And of course we got the middle man Pierce calling the signals and sporting the newly-implemented defensive headset. Trust me, it won't be as bad as those '05 playoffs, we were pulling linebackers off the street because of injuries lol

The Lions do have a shot to pull this one out. Carr playing against 3rd stringers could be bad for NY. But nobody cares if they win or lose during preseason so who knows.

You can't forget we drafted 2 young LBs with Goff and Kehl, plus Chase Blackburn (Mr. 12th man on the field in the Super Bowl). I think it is considerable depth compared to then, plus we were relying on oldies like Carlos Emmons

Something tells me Kitna's going to be on his back during this pre-season game. And if he's not on his back, he'll probably throw an INT as usual.

Doesn't really matter who wins or not, but it should be interesting. The Giants got pretty killed by Free Agency, which will happen when you win a superbowl. Their LB core might end up being by committee if anyone gets injured, I don't see them being nearly as good as they used to be. This game, and season as a whole the Giants won't have the luxury they had with Strahan and other players. Should be fun.
