A potential star? No. I’d probably place his ceiling right around a low-everyday centerfielder or a solid fourth outfielder. He’s getting a lot of buzz lately, but that’s mainly a result of people over-hyping the Sox farm system.
He’s filled out pretty well in the short amount of time he’s been a pro, but he has basically no power potential, contrary to what many others have been telling you. He’s really a slap hitter, who has no idea yet how to hit. He flicks his hands at pretty much everything near the zone, as opposed to keeping his weight on his back leg and really getting some torque on his follow through. This said, his swing is better than what many others have said about him. He’s poor at reading pitches, and is more of a trajectory reader which works well with which pitches to swing at, at the low-minor league and amateur levels, but he’ll struggle with better breaking balls once he cracks AA ball. He’s a better athlete than he appears to be, but has below-average speed at the big league level, and a rather barren set of tools. He gets good reads for his age in the field, but his arm is a 40 at best, although would be serviceable at a park like Fenway. He’s a ball player, through and through, but his status as a prospect is a bit inflated at this point. His numbers are inflated at this point considering he’s playing at a relatively low-level, but even at his age he’s shown he belongs and is a legitimate prospect, though don’t get to carried away with the “star in the making non-sense”. He’s quite a ways a way yet from the show, and he’ll probably burn through a couple options and work his way through a few extended spring training’s before he gets a call up. He’s certainly not one of the more exciting prospects in the sox system as of yet. |
