Default My first blog....

Fantasy Baseball and Josh Hamilton Part 1:

Posted by George Cruz:

I would like to start off by thanking Darius Ali for giving me this opportunity to write a sample article on sports. This is my first true article so please criticize and critique as much as you want, its not going to hurt my feelings.

Its that time of the year ladies and gentleman! Fantasy Baseball is in full swing and people are considering possible trades, pickups, and dumps for the following months to come. Who would’ve guessed that the blockbuster deal of the season would have been Josh Hamilton being sent to the Rangers for Edison Volquez? This deal has benefited both teams with outstanding play. This brings about the great topic of should we give these glorified players second chances.

As some might have heard or read, Josh Hamilton was a crack addict on a downward spiral with no end in sight, a man with so much god given talent gone astray. A man living in stranger’s houses, walking along streets with surreal thoughts running through his mind. How did I come to this? He would ask himself repeatedly day after day. What was even more surreal was his journey to this path of stardom that he’s currently in. People ask, “Josh, how did you get here?” and with the shrug of a shoulder it says it all. He just doesn’t know how he got here, but he has become a more humble man because of his experiences.

He doesn’t take his job for granted and he shows how lucky he is to play this wonderful game we call baseball, on the field. Even if Josh wasn’t productive on the field, it would still be a miracle that he is here and alive with us. Why is that American society glorifies the athlete for their achievements on the field and not off it? If you can throw a football, hit a baseball, or dunk a basketball people will be enamored. Josh validates this assertion, we don’t give enough credit to those who have struggled in life when all we concentrate on is the next ring. He’s also a symbol of second chances which we should always give to others. Jesus once said; “"Let he without sin, throw the first rock.” Josh is that symbol and at the same time that ray of hope, that anyone of us can achieve great things in times of peril and doubt. That proof is what makes this man so unique, not that he can hit a baseball, but his willingness to change; for his wife, his children, but most importantly himself. Its these relationships with God and his family that helped him prevail. He is a role model when many are nowhere to be seen. He shows kids that, drug addiction isn’t the path to go and he wants them to learn from his mistakes. On one particular night a kid asked for his autograph, and he said “Josh, you’re my savior.” And with a serene smile he asked, “Do you know who my savior is?” The boy emphatically said “Jesus Christ.” He may not know how he got here, but everyday he understands a little bit more.
