Yeah, you would really have nothing to gain by lying to the Feds all that would do would dig you deeper into the hole you are already in.

Because he does have something to gain. If he goes on with this BS story and says the shit that the Courts want to hear, they will lessen his sentance. He is doing what he can to get out of prison.

The court is going to want proof. If he has proof then the NBA is fucked. The Feds are going to investigate this no matter what.

He's not trying to get out of jail...he's already going to jail. All he's doing is trying to get a lesser sentence as part of his plea deal but that only happens if what he tells is true. Him lying only makes it worse for him. They'll add a perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements charges on top of his current sentence and the dude never gets out of jail. He has every reason to tell the truth. This isn't Barney Fife doing the investigation, this is the Federal Government. You screw them, they screw you harder. |

Same deal as Jose Canseco, and the dude trying to get Clemens. Somebody is lying. You think the NBA could pull off something so massive for so long and only NOW get found out? You know how many people would have to be involved for a rigged league to exist? It would have leaked way before this. I buy that more refs may have been involved, but I do not buy that the entire NBA as a whole sets up who wins and loses.

It doesn't take that many people.
Donaghy said TOP EXECUTIVES....Stern, the co-comish, and the VP of basketball operations. That's three guys from the NBA that need to know. Then the company men that make the calls....Bob Delany, Ken Mauer (btw he's a convicted felon so if he refutes these claims by Stern's logic we shouldn't believe him either), Dick Bavetta, Bill Spooner, etc. Not that hard to keep it quiet. Especially when you know that if you talk about it you go to jail as well. |

canseco and mcnamee both had evidence to back up their claims. you can't just tell the feds anything you want to lessen a sentence; it has to be something of substance or else you're going to get in deeper trouble. i think most people have known for a while now that the nba is little more than a dog and pony show. now we're just waiting for the truth to finally reveal itself to the rest of the world.

I think someone who is looking at 25 years in prison, has nothing to lose, and everything to gain. He extends his sentence if he lies, he may shorten it if he tells the truth. The thing I don't understand, is the stuff he did to earn 25 years has nothing to do with this. He was fixing games, for gambling. This is throwing a stone at the NBA, for fixing games for the better of a TV market.
I don't think that the NBA would exactly stand up, and say, 'Yes, we want Los Angeles and the Celtics to play one another in the Finals,' but I'm sure they wouldn't mind it if it happened. In fact, they'd probably like it that way, and the referees understand that. At best, I think these accusations are made by someone hearing a big guy in the NBA saying 'Man, that'd be a hell of a matchup,' the refs then making it so. The NBA, with all the 'judgement' calls, is the EASIEST sport to fix I think. I can't blame Donaghey for doing this, and I'm sure there is some truth to what he is saying. This is why I like College Basketball better. |
