Found this while web surfing....
"Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie offered a basketball scholarship to 6-foot-4 guard Michael Avery of Lake Sherwood, Calif., over the weekend. Avery is currently in the 8th grade and hasn't even decided where he's going to high school, but he's already accepted an offer to play basketball for the University of Kentucky."

The full story to this has been on the front page of Yahoo for a few days now, in case anyone hasn't seen it yet.

I think the odds of him going there when he actually goes through high school are slim, the real question is will Gillispie even be there when he graduates High School?

this happens to kids all over the country all the time. taylor king had a verbal commitment to UCLA as an 8th grader, imari sawyer a commit to depaul, etc. this is nothing new.

It is absolutely silly to think that a kid in the 8th grade would know where he wants to play college ball. His mind will change a hundred times from now until he graduates (if he does). I think this falls on the coaches. They should not even consider recruiting kids this young. It is not good for the kids and not good for the sport.

I agree. The just wasted thier time with this kid. Just stupid. 8th F'ing grade. Come on now. I could smash this kid one on one. Why not recruit me? He may not even want to play basketball by then. Haha.
