For the first time in 18 years, Brett Favre isn't going to be under center in Green Bay. Now, the short-term success of the Packers' entire franchise is on first-time starter Aaron Rodgers' shoulders. He will never be Favre, but he doesn't have to be because he has a plethora of talent around him and a coach who will tweak the West Coast offense to cater to Rodgers' strengths.
Head coach Mike McCarthy's West Coast offense is a great system for an unproven quarterback, like Rodgers, to develop in. Inexperienced quarterbacks tend to hold on to the football too long, but because this system is based on mostly three-step and five-step drops, Rodgers should be able to get rid of the ball quicker. He performed well in this system against Dallas last season. He did a good job of dropping back, getting rid of the ball and taking what the Cowboys gave him. But, the Packers' offense needs to add the deep ball to its West Coast system. Rodgers' ability to connect on the deep ball is going to play a large role in Green Bay's offensive success this season. One thing that made the Packers' West Coast offense under Favre a little different was the element of the big play via the deep ball. Favre was able to scramble and let his receivers get downfield. Rodgers is not nearly as athletic or mobile, but McCarthy must call for some deep balls in order to keep the defense honest. If not, defenses will start bringing their safeties closer to the line of scrimmage, which would make it more difficult to run a traditional West Coast system because it is more difficult to connect on slants, curls and outs. Rodgers is going to have a very hard time playing in Green Bay i think....i mean their fans will back who ever is under center but he is going to have to live up to some impossible standard and he has some big shoes to fill.....if he doesnt perform well within the first 2 seasons i would expect a change...
It is always hard for a team to replace a legend....not everyone can have a steve young right after a joe montana |

Well I have been a Steve Young fan since he was at BYU and even the fans in SF didn't embrace him for a long time, following a legend is probably the hardest thing to do.

I think he will do fine. GB has a good offense with definite playmakers. The thing he has to learn is that he can;t try to be Brett Favre, just Aaron Rodgers

i think A-Rod will be fine. he's been learning from one of the best for the past 3 years and it's not like the kid is talented, if i remember right the niners were considering taking him #1. and like you said he's got the playmakers around him. i mean he's got a good o-line with probably one of the best OT duos in the NFL, he's got a HB in Grant who i hope performs like he did last year, then the underrated Donald Lee at TE along with the rookie Finley who's taken over for Bubba Franks, and then you add in the stacked WR corps with Driver, Jennings, Jones, Martin, and now Nelson. I mean he has an offense to work with. But i'm not worried. With all the other QBs in the NFC North A-Rod could easily come in and become the best QB in the North. Grossman, Jackson, and Kitna?? give me a break.
