Lions sign QB Drew Henson

Drew Henson's back. Shocker. I didn't think he'd still be in the NFL.

The Lions signed former Michigan quarterback Drew Henson on Friday, with former Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton's sprained right thumb in a cast, likely for four weeks.

Henson is not expected to compete for a spot on the 53-man roster, but to help the Lions get through their last two exhibitions and perhaps provide insurance on the practice squad. The Lions' last two exhibitions are today against Cleveland and Thursday night at Buffalo.

Henson once battled Tom Brady for the Wolverines' starting job, and now Brady is considered one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. Henson, a two-sport star from Brighton, went on to play briefly for the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. He also knows Lions quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler, who played and coached at U-M.

But Henson has been out of the NFL since Minnesota cut him last August. He worked out for Jacksonville last October but the Jaguars didn't sign him.

The Lions closed the locker room to reporters Friday, and Henson was unavailable for comment.

I still remember when he was supposed, but failed to beat out Tony Romo. Anyway, I like him as a person and a player. The best thing he can hope for is that he gets playing time during the preseason in order to show a few other teams he can ride the pine for them. But he won't stick with the Lions, he's just been signed until Dre Stanton makes his return.

you dont know him personally...i played baseball with him...he was the biggest ass hole in the world..everyone at our school hated him..he was a good player...i was just happy he was out of university of michigan before i got there...i saw him the year he signed that yankees deal at his sisters graduation party...he was even worse then...his ego is so big, he will never pan out as an NFL QB because he is un willing to learn

thats what kills me...he played short in HS...i was his back up....at U of M...Shortstop....so he signs with a team who has a Short stop that will never move...i didnt get it

It's amazing this guy is given another shot. For the Texans, and the Cowboys after that, he was supposed to be a project turned star. Glad to see the guy is getting work, and I wish him well, but it's very, very unlikely.

I really don't believe that Henson's going to make the cut, but all I remember was the big expectations for him, and he did one game. He will never be a starting QB, but good to know he's around.

their is no way...except for tonights pre season game, he will not even have the chance to try and make it....but even if he did i dont think that he could beat out Orlovski or Stanton...
