SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks re-signed forward Jody Shelley to a two-year contract Monday, keeping their top enforcer in San Jose after acquiring him in a trade last season.
Shelley, an unrestricted free agent, had seven points and 91 penalty minutes in 31 games after joining the Sharks in a trade with Columbus on Jan. 29. He had spent his entire NHL career with the Blue Jackets, becoming the franchise's career leader in penalty minutes and one of the league's most feared fighters. Shelley also appeared in six playoff games for the Sharks, who had been without an enforcer since trading Scott Parker to Colorado in February 2007. "From the first day that Jody arrived here, he brought toughness and character," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "He is one of the most respected players in our room because of his team-first attitude and his willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done." Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press |
