July 1st - Big NHL Free Agency Signings
After the NFL I'm an NHL fan through and through above other the other major sports. A lot of big names moved today, here's where they're from and my thoughts:
D Wade Redden - from Ottawa to NY Rangers. I hate the Blueshirts but that's a really nice pickup for them. The Rangers also added winger Patrick Rissmiller from the Sharks.
LW Brian Rolston - from Minnesota to New Jersey. Originally reported he was going to sign with Tampa Bay, but another other team I hates gets a great vet that they drafted who still plays consistently despite getting up their in age at 35.
D Mark Streit - from Montreal to NY Islanders. Isles needed a defenseman badly and after Redden he was arguably the best one out in FA. Should help the Isles pick things up on the powerplay.
D Brian Campbell - from San Jose to Chicago. Chicago is making some interesting moves adding to their already impressive young roster.
G Cristobal Huet - from Washington to Chicago. After being dealt from Montreal at last year's trade deadline, his stellar play propelled the Capitals and almost got them through the tough 7 game series loss to the Flyers in the first round. Another great move by the Blackhawks, who finished tied with Vancouver and Edmonton for 9th in the west, just 3 points out of the playoffs. Leaves Nikolai Khabibulin's status a little uncertain, because despite his shaky play being arguably what kept this team out of the postseason, his price tag may be a little to high to jump on.
G Jose Theodore - from Colorado to Washington. When the Capitals were unable to sign Huet to a new deal, they go and bring in a veteran in Theodore. He won a series against the Wild last season, but came up short in the series sweep to the Red Wings in which Detroit put up goals of 4, 5, 4, and 8 in the decisive fourth game (Not all 8, but Theodore surrendered 3 goals on 15 shots)
LW Niklas Hagman - from Dallas to Toronto. Decent pickup for an older Maple Leafs team that is lacking in a lot of areas. Hagman played all 82 games for the Stars and in the playoffs, scoring 27 goals. Possibly a first line winger for them.
I hope somebody reads this, and feel free to comment. I don't see too much action in the NHL forums and I think it's a shame. I'll take the NHL over the NBA anyday.
