Preliminary Card Spoilers!!!! The main card has begun....
from Dave Meltzer Eddie Sanchez vs. Antoni Hardonk Sanchez dominated the position game with three takedowns in the first round. Second round saw Hardonk first connect with a hard knee, but Sanchez scored a knockdown with a punch. Hardonk was doing the better in the stand-up exchanges from that point and finished Sanchez with a left hook and ref stoppage late in the round. Paul Taylor vs. Jess Liaudin Taylor wins a split decision on scores of 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28. It came down to the third round. Taylor took the first round with a knockdown, while a slow second round saw Liaudin score several takedowns. He also scored two more takedowns in the third round but Taylor got the striking advantage to win the round on two cards. Jason Lambert vs. Luiz Cane Lambert was going for the takedown, but never came close, as Cane countered with punches, decking Lambert three times in 2:00 before it was waved off. This win is going to move Cane up in the hierarchy. Roan Carneiro vs. Kevin Burns Carneiro took Burns down and dominated with ground and pound the entire first round. Second round was more of the same until Burns shocked the BJJ black belt with a triangle from the bottom to get the tap and score a major upset. Thiago Tavares vs. Matt Wiman Very similar to the previous match. The Brazilian got the takedown and used ground and pound to domiante the first round. This time, in round two, Wiman scored with punches and knocked Tavares out in the second straight major upset. Martin Kampmann vs. Jorge Rivera Kampmann took Rivera down, got his back, was working for submissions before getting a guillotine midway through the round. All the prelims are done so live matches start at just after 3 p.m. Eastern time. |

UFC 85 Bedlam main card results by Meltzer:
Brandon Vera vs. Fabricio Werdum Oh boy. Dan Miragliotta stopped this one early. Werdum got a full mount and was pounding. Vera took shots and was defending but he wasn't hurt that badly. Vera got up really upset. Fans booed the stoppage as well. It wasn't a terrible call, but Vera wasn't hurt badly. After last week, Dan is the center of controversy. Werdum was winning the fight having got two takedowns. Vera had one nice flurry standing. Werdum claimed Vera was saying somethinn that he tought was "stop." This pretty much guarantees Werdum getting a title shot in early '09. Crowd cheered Vera big after the match. Vera said he screamed, "I'm okay" to Dan when Dan asked. He praised Werdum for mounting him but Vera said he'd take the punishment for the last 20 seconds of the round and come out for round two. Nathan Marquardt vs. Thales Leitis Very good first round. Leitis knocked Marquardt down with a right and Leitis immediately mounted him before the 2:00 mark. Marquardt escaped and hurt Leitis with an uppercut late in the round, but Leitis had recovered by the end of the round. 10-9 Leitis. Marquardt got Leitis down and was doing strong ground and pound and threw an illegal knee just before Leitis got up. This caused a foul call and Leitis got time to recover. Marquardt got him down again but late in the round, after a stand-up, Marquardt failed on a takedown and Leitis got up. Marquardt won the round but he was docked a point so it's a 9-9 round. Another controversial call coming. Marquardt threw an elbow to the side of the head and Herb Dean called it an illegal back of the head blow, and since he had warned him, docked Marquardt a point. Marquardt got the takedown and was on top most of the round. Leitis was bleeding badly from the eye, nose and maybe mouth as well. Marquardt used a piledriver with seconds left. Another 9-9 round means 28-27 for Leitis even though Marquardt won two of the three rounds from a fighting standpoint. Should be a draw because the second foul was a bad call. Scores were 28-27, 27-28, 28-27 for Leitis. Judges had it right based on what happened and the ref ruling. It would have been a draw without the bad call. First foul call was a legit docking of a point. Real good fight and a rematch is probably called for. Mike Swick vs. Marcus Davis Uneventful first round. Davis tried a takedown and tried a guillotine but Swick popped out and was on top almost the entire round. Davis didn't take a lot of punishment, but the elbows did open Davis up. Swick on top the entire round and wins 10-9. Better round. Swick was on top more. Davis' cut is on the bridge of the nose. Swick did two high kicks and a knee that put Davis down. Dais was throwing puchnes and Swick knees in a clinch. Swick got a strong takedown late. Swick's round so it's 20-18. Swick was penalized a point for grabbing the fence to avoid a takedown. This fired him up and he got a takedown and was busy punching from the top to win the round. Davis has a nasty cut and egg under the left eye. My scorecard would be 29-27 for Swick. 29-27 scores across the board for Swick. Michael Bisping vs. Jason Day Bisping really looked good here. Bisping took him down and was really strong on his ground and pound throwing his whole body into the punches. Day got up, but Bisping took him right down and did even stronger ground and pound in the second round until ref Dan Miragliotta stopped it. He applied to Guy Ritchie, who was at ringside, for a role as a gangster in a movie after the match. Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves ends the show Alves looks to me like he's 195 pounds. Hughes kept going for the takedown. Alves hurt him early and bloodied him from the top when Hughes pulled guard. Hughes got a takedown and was on top most of the round but did little damage. Alves got up and when Hughes tried another takedown, Alves was on top and did damage again. Alves 10-9 Alves finished him with a hard running knee and a few punches on the ground. Hughes body fell badly and may have blown out his knee after the knee. Alves was too big and strong so the weight issue played a major part in this. |
