while the D50 and D70 are good cameras if I was starting out I would still go with the D40...and here is the reason....the D50 and D70 use but only has the useless, obsolete black and white histogram of ancient cameras. All the others have a modern color RGB histogram which is critical for determining exposure in-camera...while the D40 does not accomodate all lenses like the others will you can only use AF-S lenses and right now Nikon only has 2 of them.....but it works perfectly with the old pro AF-I lenses....these are just two of the reasons while I also think that the ease of use of the D40 is good for the new photographer....it has a menu that is easy to understand and move through....just my thoughts for the moment...

I'm interested as well. I'm rocking a Canon A95 at the moment, and wouldn't mind really getting into photography.
Amazon has a deal on the D40 as I type this. Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX and 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens with 2 Nikon School DVD |

my uncle in the UK, has the D80 and it's a great camera. IF they all follow that mold they you are in great shape. I lmost went Nikon, but my likeness and familiarity as well as great price kept with Canon. However the kit lens is decent, I am looking at lenses today

and i still don't think the d40 is a good way to go...the only thing better about the d40 is the smaller size and the histogram...but if u ever look in to becoming a pro the bodies on the prob cameras are huge...

I think that the D40 is a good way to go for someone that is wanting to start out....I mean it does not matter what camera you buy if you get into it alot then you will want to upgrade....but I think that the D40's small size and ease of use is a good way for someone that is interested in starting out to get an idea of if they want to get more invovled or not......just my 2 cents

there are a few things that the D60 does that I like....it has a sensor built into it that will flip the screen on the back to be either horizontal or vertical...which i thought was nice cause if you are taking vertical pics you dont have to flip the camera to check your exposure....I also like the other sensor that they installed on the back of the camera under the eye piece....the sensor reads when you hold the camera up to your face and will shut off the screen on the back so the glare from that does not distract you....I also like the fact that you can create gif type files in cam and when you export it it automatically saves it as on file for you.....These are no major things just what I thought was nice about the D60 compared to the others...
