Yankees owner George Steinbrenner dies at 80« » Reply  Edit

George Steinbrenner, whose big wallet and win-at-all-cost attitude whipped the New York Yankees into a billion-dollar sports empire, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.

Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details.

Even Jerry Jones is sad about his passing...

"Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who has often been compared to the polarizing Yankees boss, was saddened by the passing of George Steinbrenner, who died at the age of 80 Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack.

"First and foremost this man was a winner," Jones said in a statement."From a person with my perspective, he was an inspiration in the area of doing everything possible - within the rules - to win."

"George redefined professional sports ownership with his vision, his ability to build a champion and a passionate approach that lifted the visibility and popularity of his franchise and his sport. From an interest level, baseball was always better when the profile and the performance of the New York Yankees was at a high level, and George always made sure that was the case."

This is heartbreaking and that club just had a huge loss already.

One thing no one can debate was George made winning #1 and that was his drive. Great to see a owner like him, even if he was considered a bit nutty.

RIP George

The Steinbrenner family has made it be known the team is not and will never be for sale. Hal Steinbrenner is the man with the torch now. He doesnt scream and yell like his old man. He's very calculated and analyitical on how he goes about the business.

I heard the saddest baseball news about the death of George Steinbrenner who demanded results and got them as the Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants since he bought the fabled club in 1973. Really, he was a great asset for Yankees.
